Better late than never

It seems as though every time we promise to keep our news updated regularly we fail, quite miserably.
Instead of giving you more excuses, (other than that we’ve simply been forgetful) we're going to try and make things up to you instead. Not quite as good as an addon release unfortunately, but at least it’s a nice selection of new screen shots and information about our projects for you to get your teeth into. As indicated in the last news release, we're still making very good progress with ArmA addons and so far, have outdone ourselves with the number of models completed, compared to our OFP days.

As always, these are beta screen shots, so expect things to be a little cleaner, naked and unfinished than what you will eventually see in the finished product. Similarly, they'll only be released when they're ready, and not a moment before… but perhaps a moment after, to keep the tension (Yes, we're horrible like that).

So, onto the new kit then. The guys have been working hard on a large variety of vehicles and weapons over the past few months, and finally we're getting a large proportion of them in game. Our enthusiasm for configs isn't quite at the same level as it is for models and textures. It's a slow process, and a lot of head scratching and bug fixing, but bit by bit we're getting somewhere! And due to the constantly changing nature of British kit, we're constantly having to amend our addons to match the latest UOR's - Urgent Operational Requirements - that the Army has with the real versions. Please also bear in mind that some of the addons have not, as yet, had their normal or specular maps applied.

First on the pile is the Challenger 2, modelled by Jtec, and textured by Chris. Currently we have the basic CR2 model made, with the usual additional armour attached. We are also planning on adding the latest UOR equipment, which includes an Enforcer remote weapons station, various pieces of ECM equipment and new variations of armour. I think you'll agree that the guys have done a stunning job thus far, and with the planned attachments, this CR2 should be an impressive looking addon.

Next is a update on the Land Rover pack, modelled and textured by Messiah. You may remember, in the last news post we showed an early version of the WMIK. These have yet again undergone some cosmetic changes, to bring them to the current EWMIK standard seen in Afghanistan. Besides the WMIK, Messiah has been finishing off the additional vehicles in the pack and making some alterations where applicable, such as BOWMAN radio systems and run flat tyres. The Land Rovers are really beginning to take shape, and at this stage are only lacking a few final details (such as dirt and scratches) before they're fit for a release.

The new weapons pack has also taken shape nicely over the last few months, with Chris, leading the way with the SA80 series of individual weapons and Messiah, creating the GPMG and LMG (a reworked BIS model with Chris' SUSAT). The contents of the pack hasn't been finalised yet, but do expect a couple of handguns, a sniper rifle and perhaps some specially equipped SA80's too.

Chris has had a tough act to follow with the SA80's. Jonno and Fat Joe's OFP weapons were of a very high standard, and even looked fairly good in ArmA. Chris has surpassed all expectations with the new SA80's, bringing the model and textures up-to-date and in line with our current standards. He has also been working on some nice sounds to go along with them.

Messiah has been creating a GPMG for use in the personal role, but also for use as a mounted weapon on a large number of our vehicles. As you can see, the new GPMG has come a long way from the previous OFP incarnation, and fits in very nicely with the rest of the weapons and the vehicles. The LMG is simply an edit of the M249 created by BIS, with specific alterations and additions to the model and textures to convert it into a Minimi Para.

Away from the CR2, Jtec has been hard at work on his very own fleet of trucks that have recently started to be deployed in the British Army. The MAN trucks have brought a new era of support vehicles to our planned ArmA content. With a large selection of vehicles, covering a variety of sizes, capacities and roles, Jtec is aiming to bring a definitive collection of British MAN trucks to ArmA.

And finally we thought we'd show you a little old lady that’s been brought out of near retirement in the British Army, a vehicle we never thought we'd end up making due to its age. After being dragged kicking and screaming from his beloved Land Rovers, Messiah has also been working on an FV432 pack, bringing the FV432 Mk3 into ArmA with a...

A New Year

We've been typically quiet as late, and with a small server incident this has begun to breed rumours of our demise, our abduction by aliens, or our well documented world cruise with Jeff. Fortunately, especially in the case of the latter, these are unfounded. We are still, as always, plodding along with our work in our own time.

So what has been going on in the last few months behind the doors at UKF? Well, we've made progress with quite a number of projects, mostly still in O2 and buldozer however. Among these is a completely reworked and remodeled infantry pack by Chris, who's fighting the joys of organic modeling to bring us a comprehensive set of British infantry units for ArmA. Jeff is playing with MAN trucks, and Swift and Benny are continuing their sterling work on the CVR(T) series of vehicles. Orson, as ever, is working on his Warriors, and he's continually impressing us with how far they've come since the OFP release.

However, a few major addons recently begun their life in ArmA, with help from RKSL with the configs, and have been seen roaming amongst the villages of Sahrani. Amongst these are Messiah's Land Rovers. It is certainly early days, as we have planned a large and quite ambitious pack, but we feel these will introduce a varied and useful selection of British vehicles into ArmA. Currently planned are:

  • Land Rover TUM (Wolf)
               Desert, Green, Green/Black, BATUS Versions
               Soft and Hard Top Versions
               FFR (Fitted for Radio) Version

  • Land Rover WMIK
               Desert/Green Versions
               GPMG, HMG, GMG Weapon Systems
'TELIC' Version (Older model with older kit)
'HERRICK' Version (Current EWMIK model with current kit)
LRRP (Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol) Version

  • Land Rover Pulse Battlefield Ambulance
               Desert, Green, Green/Black Versions

  • Land Rover Snatch
               Desert/Northern Ireland Versions

This list is of course subject to change and doesn't take into account the various different versions that can be created in the mission editor by adding or removing kit on the sides of the Land Rovers. The model has been built, altered and rebuilt numerous times over the last year, but finally we think we're getting close to what we want to achieve. Needless to say they will enjoy a full compliment of normal maps, specular maps and of course the odd easter egg here and there (High poly, normal mapped Lilt can anyone?)

Anyway, as you've been a very patient bunch over the last few months, we have some very early screenshots of the WMIK's being put through their paces. There will be a video at a later date, but for the moment you'll have to make do with the stills. Please bear in mind that these are only just BETA status. They are extremely naked and clean, and still have a lot of things to be added and altered. The troops and the weapons are our old DPM 2 pack from OFP and the ported UKF weapons. Don't get too excited.

Our web host had an intruder on their network and had to reset all passwords - unfortunately this broke our database driven website.  The new password arrived in the post today so we're back up and running.  No we haven't disbanded!

A New Era Begins

Ok, so it's been a rather lengthy period since out last update of any sort, and for this we can only apologise, but we are still alive and we're still going, but like most of the major addons teams our there; most of the work has been going on behind the scenes. The only visible clue would be the introduction of our new logo to bring in the start of this new era. Since september last year, a hell of a lot has happened in the world of OFP and ARMA and it would be prudent for me to shed some light on how this has affected UKF to date.

We should all know by now that ARMA has been finally released and is in the process of being patched into something far more stable and workable, and we are eagerly awaiting the tools so that we can start begining to release addons as soon as we can. Since the 'end' of our Flashpoint era, we have been slowly yet steadily been coverting or starting afresh on many of our most popular projects, as well as tinkering with what is possible in the new engine. This will of course all take time, but I hope to bring you some screenshots of the new kit some time soon, including the new Land Rovers, CVRTs and Warrior to name but a few.

We also hope to be co-operating more closely with other British teams in ARMA, specifically RKSL as we extend our long standing affiliation and affirm our previously unofficial agreement not to duplicate any work each other create. As was the case in OFP, this should see RKSL taking on the air and naval side of things (as well as the unusual gems that they come out with) whilst we continue with the guts of the land forces. With co-operation and sharing of models, knowledge and wives, this should lead to a very promising future for British addons in ARMA. We have some plans in store, but what this entails will be hammered out at a later date, and I guess you'll have to wait and see.

Until, then, the tools are released, we will be sitting back enjoying some lazy gaming and multiplayer matches with our other affiliates VCB, as we also affirm our close ties with them, and they continue on as our beta testers. Whilst we know it could be a long wait, we are doing everything we can using the old tools and other programs to get as much as a head start as possible. Hopefully then, once the tools are in our hands it will be a very short period till we can start releasing things to the community. There have been questions raised about the possibility of porting our OFP addons across to ARMA for the mean time, and whilst it is indeed possible, we don't feel that they represent the quality of work we are aiming to achieve with ARMA and thus for the vast majority of our addons, we have decided not to do so.

For the next news update (and this time it won't be in 9 months, I assure you) I'll get some screenies sorted for you all of the various stuff we have going. Aren't I nice?

The Site & Forums

We are aware that the site and forums have been running a little slow recently. We are trying everything in our power to rectify the situation, but unfortunately it appears to be a problem on the server end, which we are currently addressing with the hosts. Please be patient while we sort everything out, and do expect the odd few hours of downtime in the future.

UKF NEWS
16th September 2006

So, another month (or so) passes, and UKF are still plodding along with our various projects. We hope you're all still enjoying the last release, and that its given you something to while away the hours, days and months till Armed Assault is released. We're very excited at the prospect of Armed Assault being with us by christmas, and have some very big ambitions for our work with the new engine.

But before I get too carried away, we are of course still working with the Flashpoint engine, and recently the team came to a decision to concentrate its efforts on two main projects that we felt the community would be eagerly anticipating more than others. Whilst I wont reveal the two projects that are being concentrated on just yet, I will report that we have begun our team effort on them in ernest, seeing alot of progress made in the last couple of weeks on both. Hopefully we will be on the beta stage very soon.

In other news, our old friend Tigershark asked us along to do a Radio Check interview, and myself and Chris were dispatched to radio land to answer a few questions (and in my case, rather quietly). We hope you enjoyed listening to our interview as much as we enjoyed trying to get through without laughing. We were quite secretive about saying too much on DPM 2.0 as we're rather keen to keep a fair bit as a suprise, but we did pass on about 10 or so new screenshots for Tigershark to run with the interview, so we hope you enjoyed those too. For all all those who missed the interview, or who havn't a clue what we're on about, here is the site:

Radio Check and we're in Episode 5 (Quicktime required)

We will be posting some more substantial news about projects in the near future, but with our server change we've been quite busy getting new FTPs up and running and other nerdy things like that. We do hope the new site is providing a more reliable service to our members, and that you're all able to use the forums properly now.

Till our next news post, enjoy the podcast and the addons!
