Armed Assault 2

Well finally it seems that most of UKF have gotten their grubby hands on a copy of ArmA 2, and are of course currently enjoying a bit of time mucking around in the editor, playing the campaign and having a jolly good time over at VCB with some multiplayer antics.

So with the new release comes we can make a fresh start once more. Once we all grow tired of exploring the new terrain in ArmA 2 we'll crack on with converting addons across from ArmA and those that were on the brink of being released. We're taking a little step into the unknown here, and have no real idea of how long fixing the addons up to ArmA 2 will take. All we ask is that you offer us a little patience, some time to enjoy the game ourselves, and we'll get on with the modding once more.

We also ask that people refrain from converting any of our previous work from ArmA and Operation Flashpoint across to ArmA 2. By all accounts it shouldn't be a huge amount of work to get the Jackals converted, and to fix up the other odds and ends we had prepared, so bear with us and you shall (hopefully) be rewarded in time.

UKF halts public releases.

That we know many of you are eagerly following the work we are doing makes this a sad announcement to post; However, as with much in life, the actions of a few can spoil things for the rest. For a long while now, the team has struggled with the downsides of making public addons, and what we've felt for a long time has been reaffirmed by a couple of incidents over the last few weeks; The "Royal Marine" clan porting our Flashpoint Warriors without permission, and a couple of other British clans acquiring unreleased addons that they obviously shouldn't have had.

We believe that within the addon making community, there has always been an unspoken pact between those who make addons and those who use them; in return for countless hours of work towards providing the end user something for free, the end user respects the work and wishes of those that made it. Of course, in addition, our EULA makes it very clear that our work requires permission to modify. Aside from the warm fuzzy feeling of providing someone with something fun, we don't get much out of it, so we do not feel that respecting our IP (Intellectual Property) is too much to ask. However, over a long period of time it has become increasingly and painfully clear that a significant portion of our target audience no longer have any respect for the work of the UKF team: That is to say, whilst people are happy to use our work, they are equally happy to rip it apart without seeking permission.

Unfortunately, we're not the only mod team to suffer; it seems this has become all too commonplace within the community, and even BIS no longer enforces its policy on addon ownership and permissions within its own forum. Thus, we beg your understanding in our decision to put a halt on all public releases. Whilst we will be carrying on our work for our own personal use, until we are satisfied that our IP is being treated with appropriate respect, we will not resume releases.

We thank you for your support over the years, and your understanding in this matter, and we will be happy to answer any comments or questions you have on our forum.

UKF RELEASE
1st March 2009

And so it begins...

We once told the ArmA community that waiting for release dates from ourselves could be a fruitless task, and that a wiser course of thinking would be to expect nothing, and be surprised when one of our addons makes the light of day.

As many of you know we've always prided ourselves in creating addons that are realistic down to the smallest detail and functionality, as well as wanting to test, break and rebuild these addons countless times with help from our beta testers, VOLCBAT. Our commercial work has increased this desire ten fold, but it also meant that during 2008 we worked ourselves beyond our normal levels, and have since felt a little more than lethargic towards converting the content we created.

What may begin as a small trickle can become a river in time. Whilst we won't (again) be promising any sort of release schedule on the rest of our addons, we can at least begin to release those that we feel are at a level where they're ready for the general ArmA community.

And so, today, we're very happy (well, Messiah can be described as ecstatic for finally finishing something in under two years) to present to you the UKF SUPACAT Jackal MWMIK. Taken from our library description:

"Procured in 2007 via an Urgent Operational Requirement (UOR), and based off the Supacat HMT 400 vehicle, the Jackal MWIK is a high mobility weapons platform, with a unique air-bag suspension system allowing rapid movement across varying terrain. Used for reconnaissance, rapid assault, fire support and convoy protection the Jackal has the capacity to support itself and its crew over 800km. Jackal has a General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG) as crew protection and can carry either Heavy Machine Gun (HMG) or Grenade Machine Gun (GMG) as the main weapon system in the fire support role."

We have, to the best of our ability, recreated this vehicle in its entirety in ArmA, offering a selection of vehicles in three variations and in two colour schemes. Animated soft mounts, recoil, ammunition feed, GMG sight adjustments, damage and destruction textures and much more. Whilst we could go on to describe the many traits and features of the vehicles, we feel that its best left discovered and enjoyed by yourselves.

Happy Hunting.

During the forum upgrade I managed to break the server e-mail system - which I didn't notice because it could still send messages to me.  This has now been fixed and all registrations, reminders, & notifications should now be working.

Sorry for the inconvenience.
